In the southwest of Uganda, near the lush rainforests that are home to the country’s famous mountain gorillas, life is profoundly different from that of the USA and countries in Europe —both in heartening and heartbreaking ways.
In many communities, traditional gender roles persist strongly. Men are often considered the heads of the household, and in some tribes, this authority is used to deny women basic resources unless they earn money through small-scale work such as weeding or digging. Often, the income they manage to earn is spent by their husbands in bars, leaving the women and children with little to survive on.
Women here bear the greatest burden—working tirelessly to provide for their families. In conditions of extreme poverty, some women may only own a single pair of underwear, or none at all. Basic hygiene essentials like soap, toothbrushes, and sanitary products are luxuries many cannot afford.
Families tend to have many children, partly as a means of securing support in old age. While children are often seen as blessings, disabilities are tragically perceived as curses. In such cases, disabled children are hidden away, and some families face intense pressure from their communities—even calls for the child’s life to be ended. Fathers often abandon these families, leaving young mothers alone to care for their children without support or assistance. Sadly, social welfare systems are virtually nonexistent in these areas.
We have identified nearly 30 impoverished families caring for disabled children in and around the village of Bwindi. We met a 22-year-old mother who had resorted to boiling banana palm leaves to feed her three-year-old son after being abandoned by her husband. In Kisoro, another nearby village, 26 mothers struggle daily to earn enough through manual labor to feed their children.

>Electrical inspections are essential for ensuring the safety, efficiency, and compliance of any building's wiring system. Regular inspections help prevent hazards such as electrical fires, shocks, or equipment damage by identifying faulty wiring, outdated components, or code violations. Whether it's a home, office, or community facility, professional inspections provide peace of mind and help maintain a safe environment for everyone.
Donate NowEducation is the foundation for a brighter future. It empowers individuals with knowledge, skills, and confidence to break the cycle of poverty and build stronger communities. At Pigability, we believe every child deserves access to quality learning, regardless of their background or location. By supporting education, we are investing in generations of leaders, innovators, and changemakers who will shape a better tomorrow for Uganda and beyond.
Donate NowAccess to medical help can mean the difference between life and death for many families in Uganda. At Pigability, we work to ensure that vulnerable children, elderly individuals, and low-income communities receive the care they need — from basic checkups to emergency treatments. Your support helps us provide medicines, hospital transportation, health education, and mobile clinics in underserved areas. Together, we can bring healing and hope where it’s needed most.

To create lasting change, we are launching a sustainable microloan program called Pigability, inspired by a successful initiative in northern Uganda. With the support of local Ugandan partners, we aim to help poor women/families achieve financial independence by providing them with a productive asset—a pig.
Each woman/family receives one vaccinated pig, which she raises and breeds. As part of the program, she commits to returning two piglets: one as an “interest pig,” and the other to pass on to the next woman in need. On average, a pig helps support one woman and up to five children. Calculations show that each pig, through reproduction and redistribution, can positively impact up to 54 individuals.
These pigs serve not only as a sustainable source of income but also as a form of financial security. Offspring can be sold or used for food, and pigs are relatively easy to care for in Uganda’s fertile environment.
We are currently seeking sponsors to help us launch this project in the villages of Bwindi and Kisoro.
The women build pig pens themselves using local materials and sign contracts prepared by a Ugandan lawyer to ensure transparency and accountability.
With your support, we can give these women a chance to break free from poverty, support their children’s education, and build a more stable, dignified future.
